While Best Farrier needs no technical wizardry to use, there are a couple of slightly technical details to note when you start using the app the first time.
Permissions
In order to work, Best Farrier needs to have your permission to access certain resources from your device. When you launch the app the first time, you will be asked to allow Best Farrier to access your Contacts, Camera, Photos and Calendars (see images).
You are not obligated to allow access to those resources for the app to work. Just be aware that, if you don’t, the app will disable certain functionalities such as the ability to import contacts from the phone, or add pictures to a horse’s history.
If you denied permission the first time, don’t worry. You can always allow it later. The app will prompt you when you try to do something you didn’t allow before, like using the camera, and will let you open the app settings to change the permissions.
Background app refresh
Best Farrier keeps a backup of your data on our server, in order to prevent you from losing all your work if you lose your phone, and also so you can switch between devices. In order to do so, your phone must have Background App Refresh enabled.
Usually, that is enabled by default on all devices, but if you see a red warning icon on your Home screen (see image), that means your device is preventing Best Farrier from running in the background.
In that case, you can use the instructions below to try and solve this problem. After you enable background app refresh, tap the reload icon to restart the cloud backup.
In addition, you shouldn’t shut down the app when you’re not using it (by going in the app switcher screen and swiping the app up) because that will prevent the refresh from happening, and will stop your database from being automatically backed up.
On iPhones and iPads
iOS background app refresh is enabled by default, but many people turn it off to preserve the battery. If you need to check, do the following.
Go to Settings, tap on “General”, then on “Background App Refresh”. Make sure Background App Refresh is set to “On” and that it is enabled for Best Farrier. See the screenshot for reference.
On Android devices
On Android, background app refresh is on by default and you shouldn’t have to do anything. If you’re having issues, do the following on your Settings screen:
Search for “Data Usage”. On the Data Usage screen, tap on “App data usage”. Find Best Farrier on the list, tap on it and then make sure “Allow background data usage” is on.
Search for “Battery Optimization” and tap on it. Tap on the arrow by “Not optimized” and pick “All apps”. Find Best Farrier on the list and tap on it. Set it to “Don’t optimize” and tap “Done”.
