We just released version 1.8.7, with many, many under-the-hood updates required by the Google Play Store and updates to the development environment and libraries used to develop the app in both Android and iOS. Unfortunately, no new features in this version for the users… those will be coming later now that everything is up to date.

One of the side-effects of the updates is that, due to some changes in the latest Android versions, we had to change the way the app attaches files to e-mails, for example when you send out an invoice. To work around the e-mail issues created by the different requirements in different Android versions, we had to add a tiny text file called “signature.txt” along with any PDF attachments. It forces e-mails to be sent using a different permission requirement, therefore going around the problem until it gets figured out by the people that develop the 3rd-party pieces of software we use. Not the best solution, but hopefully this will get sorted out soon and we’ll remove the extra file in future versions.

After you update the app, if you’re using an Android device, the first time you send an e-mail with any attachments you will see a popup similar to the one below. No changes if you’re using an iOS device.

E-mail app chooser

Pick “Gmail” (if it’s not already pre-selected like in the image above) and “Always”. That should be it, and from now on the app should behave like it did before, except the e-mails will now include the extra “signature.txt” file along with the PDF.

If you’re curious, or any of your clients asks, the “signature.txt” file contains only the text “Sent from the Best Farrier app”. Opening it from the e-mail doesn’t do anything other than show that text. As mentioned above, as soon as the issues with the different Android version requirements are fixed, we’ll remove it from the e-mails.
